Who can submit CE activities for approval?
An individual, institution, organization, or agency responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation, financing, record keeping, and quality of nursing continuing education activity, otherwise known as a Provider, may submit CE activities for approval. The CE activity must meet the ANCC Accreditation Program definition of continuing education: systematic professional learning experiences designed to augment the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of nurses and therefore enrich the nurses' contributions to quality health care and their pursuit of professional career goals.

What are the 2 approval options?
The 2 approval options are single activity and approved provider.
 

When the individual or group wishes to provide a single activity, the vehicle for submission is the Activity application. Single activity approval is a two-year term during which the activity may be offered repeatedly given there are no substantive changes to the original activity. When an individual or group expects to provide several CE events over time, becoming an Approved Provider may be the path of choice. Eligibility for Approved Provider status begins with successful implementation of three single activities, a minimum of one having been approved by MARN. Additionally, the individual or group choosing this path needs sufficient resources (human and financial), internal processes and practices to insure ANCC criteria are followed. An Approved Provider is recognition by an ANCC-accredited approver of a provider‘s capacity to award contact hours for continuing education activities, planned, implemented, and evaluated by the provider. The term for an approved provider is three years.

How to calculate contact hours:
A contact hour is 60 minutes of an organized learning activity that is either a didactic or clinical experience.
Example:
You have planned a 2 hour educational event entitled Disaster Preparedness which is 150 minutes in length. The number of contact hours is 2.5 hours. Calculation of contact hours is determined by dividing 150 by 60 which equals 2.5 contact hours.
