Marla Weston, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, recounts her personal journey to nurse leadership and the challenges she faced along the way during times of dramatic change in health care.

Lecture attendees receive 1.25 contact hours for nursing continuing education. These may be used for RN license renewal in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and in other states where they are accepted.

Marla Weston is chief executive officer of the American Nurses Association (ANA) Enterprise, which includes the ANA; the American Nurses Foundation, ANA’s charitable arm; and the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary that promotes excellence in nursing and health care globally through credentialing programs. 

Widely recognized among nurse leaders and professional organizations, Weston was inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2012. Modern Healthcare named her one of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare in 2014, and recently designated her one if its Top 25 Women in Healthcare 2017.  

Before joining the ANA in 2009, Weston served in the Veterans Health Administration, first as program director in the Office of Nursing Services, and then as deputy chief officer in the agency’s Workforce Management and Consulting Office. She was also executive director of the Arizona Nurses Association for four years.
