| NAMI Mass is having its statewide convention on Sat. Oct. 29th at the Sturbridge Host Hotel.
Here’s just one workshop that is happening in the afternoon from 2:30 – 4pm.    And we have 9 others addressing many topics such as Bridgewater State “hospital,”  Training Police about Mental Health Issues, Peer Support, addiction and mental illness,  plus more.   Mental Illness and Violence, True or False: Trends in Media Coverage   The Boston Globe recent Spotlight six-part series focused in several articles on violence perpetrated by people with mental illness.  Is reporting heavily on violent acts by people with mental illness or suspected of having a mental health condition a current trend in the media?  Is it unfair and biased reporting causing further stigma or accurate and reliable coverage?  This workshop will use a recent study in the journal Health Affairs on “Media Coverage of Mental Illness in the United States from 1995 to 2014” as a jumping off point to discuss The Boston Globe Spotlight articles emphasizing interpersonal violence disproportionate to actual rates of such violence among the population with mental health challenges.  This issue requires education, facts and a robust discussion.   Speakers: Deb Becker, Senior Correspondent and Host at WBUR radio Scott Helman, Staff writer, The Boston Globe Danna Mauch, President and CEO, MAMH Lisa McGonagle, Family member and NAMI GB-CAN Moderator: Karen Gromis, NAMI Mass
