The National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing, co-lead by the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA), The National Association for Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), The National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations (NCEMNA), and the American Nurses Association (ANA), is holding its second annual virtual forum on November 3, 2022. The focus of this year’s forum will be addressing systemic racism. How do the current policies, practices, and systems within the institutions we operate in create and sustain racialized outcomes? What can we do to confront and dismantle systemic racism?
Systemic racism refers to how racism is embedded in and throughout systems, laws, written or unwritten policies, entrenched practices, and established beliefs and attitudes that produce, condone, and perpetuate widespread unfair treatment of people of color. Systemic racism emphasizes the involvement of whole systems, and often all systems—for example, political, legal, economic, health care, school, and criminal justice systems—including the structures that uphold the systems.
