Dr. Arlene Keeling is The Centennial Distinguished Professor Emerita and former director of the Eleanor Crowder Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry, University of Virginia. She is past President of the American Association for the History of Nursing and former editor of the Nursing History Review.
Dr. Keeling is the award-winning author of Nursing and the Privilege of Prescription and co-editor of Nurses on the Frontline, Nurses and Disasters, and Nursing Rural America. She is also the author of The Nurses of Mayo Clinic and lead author of A History of Professional Nursing in the United States. Her most recent book, The Nurses of Ellis Island, co-authored with Dr. Michele Hehman, received the 2025 Lavinia Dock Award from the American Association for the History of Nursing. In 2025, Dr. Keeling received the Mary Ann Garrigan Award from Nursing Archives Associates at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, Boston University, for her contributions to nursing history. She lives with family in Charlottesville, Virginia.
