A Message from ANA MA President November 2018

Dear Members of ANA Massachusetts,

I want to first thank all of the members of ANA Massachusetts who worked tirelessly to have our voice heard this election season.  Our nurses wrote articles, debated, knocked on doors and held signs on election day to educate the voters of Massachusetts regarding the unintended consequences of Question 1.  However, now we are faced with a greater challenge.  This election season nurses in the Commonwealth became divided on the staffing issue when our unified goal is to provide our patients with high quality care.  Let’s join together and work together to achieve these professional goals.

ANA Massachusetts continues to support optimal staffing as an essential component of providing nursing care to our patient.  ANA nationally has introduced the Safe Staffing for Nurse and Patient Safety Act of 2018 (S. 2446H.R. 5052).  The bipartisan legislation requires hospitals to establish a committee, comprised of a minimum of 55 percent direct care nurses, to develop nurse staffing plans specific to each patient care unit.

ANA Massachusetts will continue to be the voice of professional nursing practice in the Commonwealth.  We will continue to support all Registered Nurses.  We will continue to address legislative issues affecting nursing practice, work to ensure that nurses are practicing to the full extent of their education and training, promote an improved nursing educational system for seamless academic progression and allow nurses to become full partners in all healthcare decisions in Massachusetts.
