ANAMASS President' Message
Share |

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you are all enjoying your summer. It has been a busy and productive one thus far for ANA Massachusetts! I wanted to provide an update on some of the things ANAMASS has been working on.

First, ANAMASS is looking for a nurse who is forward thinking, innovative and passionate about healthcare to be appointed to fill a vacant position as Director (term ending Spring 2021) on the ANA Massachusetts Board of Directors. This is a great opportunity to become involved with ANAMASS during an exciting and dynamic time in healthcare. If interested, please forward a current resume and Declaration of Interest Form to and no later than August 21, 2019.

On July 15th, the Board of Directors, Past Presidents, and Committee Chairs held a very successful strategic planning retreat, facilitated by Betsy Cox. The passion and dedication for ANAMASS was palpable in the room, and each member brought innovative ideas to the table. The positive energy and sharing of a common purpose assisted the group in generating a plan that will be forward thinking for the next three years. There will be continued work by the Board and committees to finalize the work. Once the plan is complete, it will be made available for viewing on our website. We welcome your feedback.

ANAMASS has also met with legislators at the State House to discuss important legislation related to appointing a nurse to a seat on the Health Policy Commission. In addition, ANAMASS members have already provided written and/or verbal testimony on important bills related to the HPC, the Nurse Licensure Compact and workplace violence. The September issue of the Massachusetts Report on Nursing will include an overview of many of the bills that ANAMASS is actively supporting.

ANAMASS was also well represented at ANA’s Membership Assembly in Washington D.C. Tiffany Kelley, President Elect; Myra Cacace, Director & Past President; and Cammie Townsend, Executive Director, lobbied on Capitol Hill and visited the offices of Senator Markey, Representative Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Lori Trahan, Katherine Clark, and Senator Elizabeth Warren. They also participated in important discussions on vaccinations, a nurse’s role when a patient requests assistance with dying, allowing DACA recipients to take the NCLEX exam, and more. And a big congratulations to Gayle Peterson who was elected as Chair of ANA’s Nominating Committee!

ANA and ANAMASS are supporting federal legislation related to the United States Cadet Nurse Corps (USCNC). Nurses who enlisted to serve in WWII are simply requesting a flag and a plaque to be placed at their burial sites. Nothing more. No additional veteran's benefits. So far, 22 legislators have signed on as co-sponsors to the bill, including Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey from Massachusetts. If you have family or loved ones in other States, please consider contacting them and asking them to reach out to their legislators to support this important bill. You can also visit their Facebook page for more information: Friends of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps.

I will continue to provide our members with updates throughout the year. Please reach out anytime if you are interested in joining any of our efforts. As always, please send your comments, questions & ideas to Thank you for your commitment to our incredible organization. We look forward to hearing from you.
